FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MP Marilyn Gladu congratulates new Governor General Mary Simon upon her swearing-in
SARNIA, ON— Sarnia-Lambton MP Marilyn Gladu, Critic of the President of the Queen’s Privy Council, welcomes and congratulates new Governor General Mary Simon upon her swearing-in today.
“This is a momentous occasion for Canada, to have our first Indigenous, Inuk Governor General sworn-in. I am pleased to see more Indigenous female leadership in Canada, from which our entire country can benefit,” said MP Gladu. “This is an important step on the path to reconciliation, and creating a more inclusive and equitable Canada.”
Madame Simon has an illustrious career record, having won numerous awards, including the Order of Canada, and has diplomatic experience as a previous ambassador to Denmark, among many other notable offices. “Madame Simon has the experience and wisdom necessary to conduct the roles of the Governor General position with excellence, restoring the position to the prestige it commands,” said MP Gladu.
MP Gladu noted the timing of Madame Simon’s swearing-in was in line with a possible writ-drop, the PM now able to call an election with a Governor General installed, rather than the Supreme Court Chief Justice fulfilling the duties on an interim basis, after the departure of former Governor General, Julie Payette.
“How convenient for the Prime Minister, to now have the ideal conditions for an election, after he maintained he didn’t want one throughout the last year,” said MP Gladu.
