PRESS RELEASE: Opposition parties support Conservatives’ Bill C-228

June 14, 2022

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa, ON – Marilyn Gladu, Associate Conservative Shadow Minister for International Trade and Supply Chains, released the following statement ahead of second reading debate on her Bill C-228: An Act to amend the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act and the Pension Benefits Standards Act, 1985, to highlight the three opposition parties’ support for this important piece of legislation:

“Bill C-228 proves Parliament can get behind good ideas.

“Strengthening the pensions of Canadians through further legislative protections has been a priority for opposition parties for years now. Both the Bloc and NDP have attempted to pass similar legislation since the Trudeau government was first elected in 2015.

“MP Gladu’s bill would ensure that in the event of an employer going bankrupt the employer must prioritize paying and maintaining eligible employees’ pensions before addressing other financial liabilities.

“By working with Members from both the NDP and the Bloc, this important piece of legislation should finally pass the Liberal controlled House at second reading and be sent to committee.

“Conservatives will always stand up for working Canadians and propose common-sense legislation to defend their futures. In the face of record inflation and Justin Trudeau’s cost-of-living crisis, it is more important than ever that parliamentarians can find common ground to advance legislation to improve the lives of hard-working Canadians.

“While the Liberals focus on division, Conservatives will continue to look for common ground to keep Parliament moving.”
