MAR. 1, 2024

OTTAWA, ON: Marilyn Gladu, Member of Parliament for Sarnia—Lambton and Shadow Minister of Civil Liberties, sends her heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones the Right Honorable Brian Mulroney, the 18th Prime Minister of Canada, upon the news of his passing.

“Mr. Mulroney was a true Canadian statesman, achieving remarkable success in both his career in business and in his political life. He succeeded in winning the biggest majority in Canadian history, followed by a remarkable re-election.

His actions as Prime Minister became an impressive political legacy. He was instrumental in the 1991 Air Quality Agreement with our American allies, in the successful push to curb acid rain. His environmental stewardship also led to the creation of the Environment Protection Act, as well as eight new national parks. His vision on free trade culminated in the NAFTA agreement, a key pillar of our trade legislation for decades. He championed our Canadian businesses and economy, and focused on restoring fiscal responsibility to Canada.

He was also influential in the international fight against South Africa's apartheid regime, and was thanked personally by Nelson Mandela in 1990 when Mandela was released from prison.

Mr. Mulroney’s legacy is embedded in Canada’s history, and our country is poorer for his loss. My deepest condolences and prayers go out to his family, as well as all who knew and loved him.

May he rest in peace.”
